Choe Yeong Jang Group Shrine, Tongyeong
통영 최영장군 사당 · 痛營 崔瑩將軍 祠堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine was built to honour General Choe Yeong, who defended Tongyeong from Japanese pirate raids at the end of the Goryeo dynasty. Choe Yeong was a renowned general and state councillor of Goryeo. At home he repelled Japanese pirate raids on numerous occasions and played a major part in suppressing the Red Turban Rebellion, while abroad he distinguished himself serving as a volunteer soldier in Yuan China. He attempted to block the forces of Yi Seong-gye when Yi turned his army back from Wihwado Island, but failed; he was captured by Yi Seong-gye and exiled to his hometown of Gobong-hyeon, before being taken to Gaeseong and beheaded. Inside the shrine is a spirit tablet inscribed 'Spirit Tablet of Meritorious Subject of Goryeo, General Choe Yeong,' with a portrait of General Choe Yeong escorted by celestial maidens on the left, and on the right a statue of the groom attending the general's horse as he rides. Villagers hold a memorial rite here every year, in the twelfth and first months of the lunar calendar.
