Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAt the centre of the painting, Sakyamuni Buddha sits in full lotus position on a lotus pedestal, forming the mudra of preaching the Dharma, with a relatively high usnisha, the cranial protuberance, on his head. In the middle of his forehead is a prominent urna, the white curl of hair symbolising wisdom, and his robe is a variant form covering both shoulders. His head halo is green and his body halo is gilded, with a coloured band around the edge. To either side of Sakyamuni Buddha stand the Six Great Bodhisattvas and the Four Heavenly Kings. The bodhisattvas each have a round green head halo, hold their respective ritual implements, and wear ornately decorated crowns. Flanking the Six Great Bodhisattvas and facing the Buddha are the Four Heavenly Kings, each wearing splendid armour and heavenly robes: Dhrtarastra, Guardian King of the East, holding a pipa; Virudhaka, Guardian King of the South, holding a long sword; Virupaksa, Guardian King of the West, grasping a dragon and a wish-fulfilling jewel; and Vaisravana, Guardian King of the North, holding a jewelled pagoda and a jewelled cart. On either side of Sakyamuni Buddha's head halo are arranged five disciples, including Ananda and Kasyapa, along with eleven further figures depicted in official court attire. The monk-painter Wanho Nakhyeon took part in its production in 1924.
