Seongmunjeong Pavilion
석문정 · 石門亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the pavilion of Kim Seong-il (1538–1593), built in 1588, the 28th year of King Seonjo's reign. Kim Seong-il built the pavilion halfway up Cheongseongsan Mountain here, and amid the clear waters of the Nakdonggang River — said to flow some seven hundred ri (a traditional unit of distance) — and the surrounding natural scenery, he devoted himself to the study of Neo-Confucianism and to training his disciples. He inherited the Neo-Confucian scholarship of the great scholar Yi Hwang, and after passing the state examination in 1568, the first year of King Seonjo, he served as governor of Gyeongsang Province. The pavilion is four kan wide and two kan deep, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character 八 when seen from the side.
