Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Hyojagangsunhang Memorial Gate Pavilion, standing beside the road in front of Pyeonggwang-dong village, Dong-gu, consists of a memorial plaque and memorial gate pavilion erected to honour the filial conduct of Gang Sun-hang (1745–1830), a figure of the late Joseon period. From childhood Gang Sun-hang was exceptionally filial, and despite his family's extreme poverty he cared for his parents with the utmost devotion for more than fifty years, earning the praise of his fellow villagers. The memorial gate pavilion is said to have been built by his son in 1830, the 30th year of King Sunjo. In 1816, the 16th year of King Sunjo, on the recommendation of Yi Jon-su, governor of Gyeongsang Province, he was appointed to the rank of Tongjeongdaebu (an honorary senior official title) and at the same time received a reward for his filial piety, with a memorial plaque bestowed upon him. In 1830, the 30th year of King Sunjo, having reached the age of 100, he was appointed Sungjeongdaebu Dongjijungchubusa (an honorary senior official title), and as a result his wife and three generations of his ancestors were posthumously granted various official ranks. The building is one kan wide and one kan deep, with a gabled roof forming the shape of the character 人 when seen from the side.
