Seonwon Lecture Hall
선원강당 · 仙源講堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a lecture hall built to commemorate the place where Hwasan Gwon Ju studied. Gwon Ju (1457–1505) was a civil official of the early Joseon dynasty who passed the state examination in 1480, the 11th year of King Seongjong, rose through many government posts including Chief Royal Secretary, and, being fluent in Chinese, played a part in diplomacy with Ming China. After his death, in 1506, the first year of King Jungjong, the court posthumously granted him the post of Right State Councillor. This lecture hall was built by his descendants, though exactly when is not known; it is said to have been rebuilt in 1843, the ninth year of King Heonjong of Joseon. The hall measures four kan across the front and two kan to the side, with an elaborate hip-and-gable roof shaped, when seen from the side, like the Chinese character for "eight" (八). The central four kan form a wooden-floored hall, and the two kan on either side are made into rooms.
