Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDosanseowon Confucian Academy was founded in 1623 to honour the brothers Choe Gyun (sobriquet Soho) and Choe Gang (sobriquet Sogye), who repelled Japanese invaders. In 1713 it received royal recognition as a saaek seowon, an academy granted a royal plaque, bonded servants (nobi) and books by the king, but it was closed under the order of the Heungseon Daewongun abolishing private Confucian academies. It was rebuilt in 1870 and has stood since. For their merit in raising a righteous army during the Japanese invasions, the two brothers were given the posthumous titles Uimin and Uisuk respectively. Dosanseowon Academy in Goseong stands facing south-west at the foot of a hill's southern slope. It follows the jeonhak-humyo layout, in which the lecture hall where Confucian students studied is placed on the lower ground and the shrine housing the spirit tablets stands on the higher ground. The lecture-hall precinct is arranged in a square (ㅁ-shaped) layout centred on the lecture hall, with an outer three-bay gate (oesammun) to the front and the east and west dormitories (donjae and seojae) to either side. The shrine, Sungeuisa, measures three kan across the front and one and a half kan in depth. Its roof is a mapae gabled roof, sloping on two sides. A narrow eaves bay (toetkan) runs along the front, and a single open-plan wooden-floored room at the rear enshrines the spirit tablets. The gongpo - wooden bracket sets fitted between the eaves and pillars to bear the weight of the eaves - are of the ikgong type, incorporating members shaped like a bird's wing. There are three dori, the horizontal beams laid across the pillars to support the rafters. The lecture hall measures four kan across the front and one and a half kan in depth, with a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof combining a rectangular eave line with a triangular gable. Yangjimun Gate measures three kan across the front and one kan in depth, built in the sotdaemun style, with its roof raised higher than the flanking wings so that a palanquin could pass through. The servants' quarters (haengnangchae) to the left of Yangjimun Gate measures three kan across the front and two kan in depth, with a single-layer eave and a paljak roof. Its plan has a two-kan wooden-floored hall at the centre, flanked on each side by a one-kan heated room (ondol) with an attached narrow veranda. Its bracketing is of the soro-sujang type, and it likewise has three dori spanning the pillars to carry the rafters. The east dormitory, Heunghakjae, measures four kan across the front and one and a half kan in depth; the west dormitory, Jinsujae, measures three kan across the front and one and a half kan in depth. All the roofs are of the paljak type.
