This Confucian academy was built to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of State Councillor Hwang Hui. Hwang Hui (1363-1452) was an early Joseon civil official known for his benevolent and incorruptible character and his deep loyalty and filial devotion, and he is celebrated as the most esteemed state councillor of the entire Joseon Dynasty. Changgyeseowon Academy was founded in 1695, the 21st year of King Sukjong of Joseon, closed in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing private Confucian academies, and rebuilt in 1955. The only building that survives today is Sanghyeonjae, which measures three kan across the front and one kan in depth, with a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" when seen from the side. Within the academy, spirit tablets are enshrined centred on State Councillor Hwang Hui, together with those of Hwang Su-sin, Gang Baek-jin and Jang Eung-du, and memorial rites are held every year in the seventh lunar month. This academy is the oldest Confucian academy in Jangsu County.
