Old House in Bangseo-dong, Cheongju
청주 방서동 고가 · 淸州 方西洞 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Old House in Bangseo-dong, Cheongju is presumed to have been built in 1860, the 11th year of King Cheoljong, on the basis of a sangnyangmun (ridge-raising inscription) carved into the main beam reading "Sungjeonghu-sagyeongsin" (崇禎後四庚申). However, when the roof, which used traditional Korean clay tiles, was dismantled, an inscription reading "Ganghui-imo" (康熙壬午) was found on an eave-end tile, showing that tiles made in 1702, the 28th year of King Sukjong, had been used in the building. Because of this discovery, it remains unclear whether the house was newly built in 1860, as the ridge inscription states, using tiles brought over from another, older building, or whether a house originally built in 1702 was repaired and rebuilt in 1860. The house underwent a full dismantling and repair in 2005. The house is said to have originally comprised an anchae (main women's quarters), a sarangchae (men's quarters), a haengnangchae (servants' quarters), a shed, and a shrine, but only the anchae and sarangchae survive today. The anchae is an L-shaped building with four-and-a-half bays across the front and five bays to the side, with single eaves and a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof. In plan, a two-bay daecheong (wooden-floored hall) sits at the centre with rooms on either side, and a toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) runs along the right side. In the wing extending to the left, a kitchen and bathroom are located at the lower end of the room connected to the main section, and the individual rooms are linked by an umul-maru (well-pattern wooden floor) along the front veranda. Through the condition of its structural members, its framing techniques and its spatial layout, the Old House in Bangseo-dong, Cheongju allows the traditional residential style of the Cheongju region in the late Joseon period to be studied.
