Doyeonseowon Confucian Academy, Goseong was built to honour the memory of Heo Gi, Heo Cheon-su and Heo Jae. It was established in 1687, the 13th year of King Sukjong of Joseon, but was closed in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon, before being rebuilt in 1920. The buildings that survive today are the lecture hall, the shrine known as Chuwonsa, the Donhwasil and Myeongseongsil chambers, the inner three-bay gate, and the outer three-bay gate known as Irwonmun. The lecture hall measures five bays across the front and three bays to the side, with a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when seen from the side. Chuwonsa, standing on higher ground behind the lecture hall, measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a gabled (matbae) roof that forms the shape of the character for "person" (人) when seen from the side. Donhwasil and Myeongseongsil each measure three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with hipped-and-gabled roofs. Irwonmun, the outer gate, is a three-bay sotdaemun (gate with a raised central bay); unusually, its central bay serves as the entrance and has a railed pavilion set above it. Memorial rites are held at this academy every year in the third and ninth lunar months.
