This seated stone Buddha stands at the site of Gulsansa Temple in Haksan-ri, Gujeong-myeon, Gangneung, Gangwon State. Of the three stone Buddhas handed down at this site, two intact figures are enshrined in a small hermitage, while the third, which has lost its head, lies in a well. All three Buddhas have one hand wrapped around the index finger of the other, the hand gesture (mudra) typically taken by Vairocana Buddha, suggesting that they were likely made together as a Vairocana triad meant to be enshrined as a set. The face is a long, round oval, and the shoulders appear somewhat hunched. The robes are rendered thickly, so that the contours of the body are not revealed, and the hands held near the chest look somewhat stiff. With its long, round face, flattened body and curvilinear carving, this Buddha follows the naturalistic style that was popular in the early Goryeo period, while also displaying the character of regional sculpture.
