Sabinseowon Confucian Academy
사빈서원 · 泗濱書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to honour the memory of Cheonggye Kim Jin and his five sons, and to educate future scholars. Kim Jin (1500–1580) was a scholar of the mid-Joseon period who showed outstanding talent from a young age, and broadened his learning by seeking instruction from renowned Confucian scholars. After his death, the state posthumously conferred on him the title of Minister of Personnel. Sabinseowon was founded in 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong, and was later closed in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing Confucian academies. It was rebuilt in 1882, the nineteenth year of Emperor Gojong, though only the lecture hall and the caretaker's building survive from that time. Because of the construction of Imha Dam, the academy was moved from Saui-ri in Imha-myeon to Imha-ri in 1987, and was then relocated to its present site in 2005 under a restoration project. The lecture hall and caretaker's building are traditional tile-roofed structures that follow the architectural style of the Confucian scholars of the Andong region, and are well preserved in their original form. Memorial rites are held at this academy every March and September.
