Hoamsa is a shrine dedicated to General Cheon Man-ri, pen name Saam, who came from Ming China and became a naturalised subject of Joseon. It is said that because he had lived below Cheongobong Peak on Jungbuksan Mountain to the west, he took the surname Cheon. When the Imjin War (the Japanese invasion of 1592) broke out, Joseon requested reinforcements from Ming China, and General Cheon Man-ri came to Joseon together with his son Sang, following the Ming general Li Rusong. He distinguished himself in numerous battles, including the Battle of Pyeongyang, and during the Jeongyu War (the second Japanese invasion of 1597) he distinguished himself again at Ulsan. Even after the war ended he did not return to China but remained to live in Joseon; in recognition of his achievements, King Seonjo granted him the title of Hwasan-gun and thirty gyeol of farmland, and also appointed his son Sang as Jwa-yun (Deputy Mayor) of Hanseongbu. Hoamsa faces east at the foot of a hillside, where the gradient is steep and bedrock is exposed. It follows the jeonhakhumyo arrangement, with the lecture hall where students studied placed on the lower part of the slope and the shrine housing the spirit tablets on the higher ground, the lecture hall and shrine being set out along an east-west axis. The lecture hall measures four bays across the front and one and a half bays to the side, and its roof is a hip-and-gable roof (paljak-jibung) with square eaves and a triangular upper section. It has two central bays of wooden flooring flanked on either side by heated rooms with narrow veranda floors. It has three purlins resting across the columns to carry the rafters, and is finished in the somo-sujang style, with small brackets supporting the purlins and tie-beams. The shrine measures three bays across the front and one and a half bays to the side, and its roof is a gable roof (matbae-jibung), sloping on two sides. It has a narrow bay at the front and, at the rear, a single continuous wooden-floored room in which the spirit tablets are enshrined.
