Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is Choe Heung-won Memorial Gate Pavilion, a jeongnyeogak built in 1789, the thirteenth year of King Jeongjo, to honour the filial devotion of Choe Heung-won. It stands facing west, bordered by a stream to the east, on the right side of the village's main path in Otgol (present-day Dunsan-dong). Facing the sajumun, a simple four-post gate, at the centre of the west front, stands a single-bay stele pavilion, and the whole is enclosed within a square earthen-and-stone wall in the traditional Korean style, forming a single compound. The stele pavilion is a single-bay building with double eaves and a gable roof. Dressed granite foundation stones are laid on a low platform, with round columns raised to form the walls, and the upper part of each wall is fitted throughout with hongsal, a lattice screen of vermilion-painted bars. Two-tiered ikgong brackets sit atop the columns, and the space between the changbang (horizontal tie-beam) and the dori (purlin) is decorated with round hwaban blocks. The bracket assembly consists of a first-tier bracket in the upturned 'angseo' form topped with a lotus-bud ornament, and a second bracket arm in the downturned 'suseo' form; the beam ends above the brackets are decorated with phoenix-head carvings. The upper roof frame is built in the samnyangga (three-purlin) structure, with double eaves and a gable roof, and wind boards are fitted to both gable ends. Both the interior and exterior are decorated in the moro-dancheong style, a form of dancheong (traditional decorative colour painting) applied only to the ends of the timber members.
