Gapjinbukjeongnok
갑진북정록 · 甲辰北征錄

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a collection of poems written by Mungok Kim Su-hang (1629–1689), who served as Chief State Councillor under King Sukjong of Joseon; it was compiled in 1715, the 41st year of King Sukjong, by his eldest son Kim Chang-jip (1648–1722). Kim Su-hang placed first in the civil service examination in 1651, the second year of King Hyojong, and went on to hold posts including jeonjeok at Seonggyungwan, jwarang at the Ministry of War, and champui at the Ministry of Justice. In 1662 he became Minister of Rites by special royal order, subsequently serving as minister of all six ministries, and at the age of 44 held the posts of Third State Councillor and then Second State Councillor. He later became Chief State Councillor and held the Namin faction to account, but when the Namin regained power in the Gisa Purge, they had him falsely accused, and he died after being forced to drink poison. Kim Su-hang, once revered as the leader of the Sarim literati, excelled in poetry and prose and was regarded as the foremost master of parallel prose of his age, skilled equally in the seal, regular, and cursive scripts of calligraphy. He was enshrined and honoured with memorial rites at Confucian academies throughout the country, and his posthumous title was "Munchung." Kim Chang-jip was a civil official under King Sukjong, with the posthumous title "Chungheon." The contents of this book also appear in the Mungokjip, the collected works of Kim Su-hang, but about a third of them are missing there, because this book was discovered only after the Mungokjip had already been published. It contains 76 Chinese-language poems that Kim Su-hang composed while travelling through Hamgyeong Province between the intercalary seventh month and the tenth month of 1664, the fifth year of King Hyeonjong. The book measures 32.8 cm in width and 38.2 cm in height, and consists of a single volume of 50 leaves, 100 pages.
