Lotus Pedestal in Gyoseong-ri, Jincheon
진천 교성리 연화대좌 · 鎭川 校成里 蓮花臺座

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis lotus pedestal remains in place with the Buddha statue it once supported now lost; it is an outstanding hemispherical work, almost perfectly preserved and finely carved. The pedestal is formed by stacking a natural stone as the base, octagonal middle and lower stones, and a rounded upper stone. On the upper stone, lotus-flower designs and bosanghwa (auspicious-flower) designs are carved below and above respectively, with lotus seeds and leaves adding further decoration and splendour. This lotus pedestal is a rare example of a Buddha pedestal in the North Chungcheong region, well equipped with all its constituent elements, and it clearly displays features that allow the development of Buddha pedestals during the Goryeo period to be traced.
