Yongdamsa Temple is said to have been first founded in 664, the fourth year of King Munmu of Silla, by the Venerable Hwaeom, and to have been rebuilt in 1574, the seventh year of King Seonjo of Joseon, by the Buddhist master Song Hye-jeung. Over the long years the temple's other buildings have disappeared, and today only the Yongdamsamuryangjeon Hall, a monks' quarters building, and a Daeungjeon Hall built in recent times remain standing. The Muryangjeon Hall is a building of three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a plain gable roof (matbae), giving it a simple, unadorned structure. It is said that a hermitage called Geungnakam once stood 500 m to the west, and Geumjeongam Hermitage still remains halfway up Geumhaksan Mountain, 800 m to the south.
