Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Confucian academy was built to honour the memory of Guam Yi Jeong, a scholar of the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon (r. 1545–1567). Yi Jeong (1512–1571), having earned the jinsa licentiate degree, took first place in a special civil service examination in 1536, the 31st year of King Jungjong, and went on to hold a succession of high offices. He was well versed in Neo-Confucianism and devoted himself to educating the younger generation. The academy was established in 1606, the 39th year of King Seonjo, and its shrine, Gusansa, was built in 1611, the third year of King Gwanghaegun. In 1676, the second year of King Sukjong, it received a royal plaque bearing the name "Gugye" and was elevated to the status of a royally chartered academy. In 1723, the third year of King Gyeongjong, the memorial tablet of Seongong Kim Deok-ham was additionally enshrined; the academy was closed in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing Confucian academies, and was rebuilt in 1931. Within the academy stand the Daegwandae, the shrine, the Dongjae and Seojae dormitories, and the inner and outer three-bay gates, and memorial rites are held there every March and September.
