The Seated Cheokpanam Hermitage Stone Buddha underwent regilding in recent years and is in excellent condition. There is a cavity for sacred deposits (bokjang) in the base of the statue, sealed with hanji, traditional Korean paper, inscribed with Sanskrit characters. The original deposits placed inside the statue when it was made were stolen and no longer exist; new deposits were made and enshrined when the statue was regilded in 1996. This stone seated Buddha is enshrined as the principal image in the main hall of Cheokpanam Hermitage. Both hands rest on the knees, which are crossed in the full lotus position, forming the earth-touching gesture (hangma chokjiin), a hand posture marking the Buddha's enlightenment. The head is large in proportion to the body, the shoulders and knees are narrow, and the head is tilted slightly to the right. Although the figure as a whole does not achieve a settled, stable form, the corners of the lips turn up slightly in a smile, giving the face a relatively gentle expression. The Seated Cheokpanam Hermitage Stone Buddha is small in scale, standing 37.5 cm high. The relatively large, square face in proportion to the body, and the schematic, stiff drapery folds seen in the outer robe (daeui) and the horizontal undergarment (seunggakgi), are typical of Buddhist sculpture of the late Joseon period. The stone material also shows the limits of the carving: the hands placed neatly together on the knees, and the feet and drapery folds, are thick and lack fine detail. Nevertheless, the statue is well preserved and has value as source material, being one of the small stone Buddhas enshrined in small regional shrines across the country in the late Joseon period.
