Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built in the late nineteenth century by Choe Myeong-deok, the twelfth-generation descendant of Choe Dong-jip, the founding ancestor of Otgol village, as a residence for his son's branch household; it stands just in front of the head house of the Gyeongju Choe clan. Entering through the gate standing in the lane to the right of the village's main path, one finds the single-row sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (women's quarters), each straight in plan, standing parallel to each other in the shape of the character 二 and facing south. At the time of construction the anchae had a tiled roof and the sarangchae a thatched roof, but in 1918 the sarangchae was rebuilt with a tiled roof, and the anchae was enlarged with extra bays and taller columns. The sarangchae is a single-row, single-eaved building with a hip-and-gable roof, measuring five bays across the front and one and a half bays to the side. It is centred on an open daecheong (wooden-floored hall) at the front, flanked by a sarangbang (men's room) and a chimbang (bedroom), with a narrow toenmaru (veranda) at the front for access. Two-leaf folding doors (bunhapmun) stand between the daecheong and the rooms, and two-leaf lattice doors (sesalmun) are fitted at the front of the rooms; storage spaces are built along the entire rear wall of the sarangbang.
