Only part of the Gangneung Royal Tomb Sangye-ri Stone Pagoda's foundation survives, so its original structure cannot be determined; the present base has been reconstructed using newly added stones. The body of the pagoda was built with the main body stones and roof stones carved separately; the roof stones have an upper sloping surface considerably thicker than the supporting base beneath, with a steep incline. The first-storey roof stone has four tiers of supports on its underside, and holes can be seen at its four corners where bells were once hung; the second- and third-storey roof stones are so worn that their original form is difficult to make out. At the top are a noban (a flat stone supporting the finial) and a bokbal (an ornament shaped like an upturned bowl), along with a single surviving borun (a wheel-shaped finial element) crowning the structure. Judging by the style of each part, the pagoda is presumed to have been built during the Goryeo period.
