Three-story Stone Pagoda at Sinheungsa Temple Site, Namhae
남해 신흥사지 삼층석탑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis three-storey stone pagoda stood on the former site of Sinheungsa Temple, which was founded by the monk Wonhyo during the reign of King Sinmun of Silla; today only the site remains, having become the village of Danghang-ri. As the village grew up on the former temple site, the pagoda was moved several times before villagers relocated it to its present spot in 1957; with each move, stones from various parts were lost or damaged. The foundation has now disappeared entirely, leaving only the first-storey body stone, the roof stones of the first, second and third storeys, and the finial elements of a bogae (a lid-shaped capstone) and a borun (a wheel-shaped ornament). The pagoda is presumed to have been built around the end of Goryeo and the beginning of Joseon; the second- and third-storey body stones were added later as replacements.
