This book is a manuscript recording the procedures for various major ceremonies in which the magistrate of Yangcheon-hyeon, Gyeonggi Province, took part. It brings together fourteen documents in a single volume: eleven holgi, ritual protocol texts setting out the order of a ceremony, and three invocatory and memorial prayer texts. It was originally a book of thirteen sheets of paper bound with thread, each sheet backed and thickened like the leaves of a folding album. Its contents cover the Manggwollye, a rite performed bowing towards the royal palace from a distance; the Sajik Daeje, the great state rite to the gods of soil and grain; the Seonghwangje, a rite to the town's guardian deity; the Yeoje, a rite for spirits with no descendants to tend them; the Alseongnye, a rite of paying respects at a Confucian shrine; and the Gokballye, a rite of ritual wailing performed in formation during a state mourning, among others. The detailed contents are as follows: a holgi for the New Moon and Full Moon palace rite; a holgi for the New Moon and Full Moon incense-burning rite; a holgi for the palace rite on the Winter Solstice and New Year's Day; a holgi for the palace rite on a new official's taking up his post; a holgi for the Confucian shrine rite; a holgi for the mourning-wail rite; a holgi for the New Moon and Full Moon mourning-wail rite; a holgi for the reading of a royal pardon; a holgi for the Sajik Daeje together with its invocation format; a holgi for the Seonghwangje together with the invocation format for its announcing rite; and a holgi for the Yeoje together with its memorial-text format. As for the date this set of holgi was compiled: the invocation formats for the Sajik Daeje and Seonghwangje address the "Spirit of the County's Altar of Soil" (縣社之神), the "Spirit of the County's Altar of Grain" (縣稷之神), and the "Spirit of the County's Town Guardian" (縣城隍之神), using the word hyeon (county) rather than gun (district). Since the reorganisation of Joseon's local administrative divisions from hyeon to gun took place after the Gabo Reform, in May 1895 (Royal Decree No. 98), and given the present condition of the object, it can be concluded that this was written and used at Yangcheon-hyeon no later than the 19th century. This set of holgi offers a valuable look at the ritual procedures of major ceremonies at a local government office in the Joseon period, and is a rare surviving example from the Seoul region.
