This is a seated image of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva enshrined in the Myeongbujeon Hall (Hall of the Underworld) of Sojaesa Temple. Votive objects found inside the statue during a recent regilding project included a dedicatory record stating that the statue was made in the Gyechuk year, the twelfth year of the Kangxi era (1674), and that it was repaired and regilded beginning on the 20th day of the third month and completed on the 6th day of the fourth month of the Sinyu year, the sixth year of the Qianlong era (1741). As both the date of its making and the record of its later repair are known, and as it is relatively large for an image of Ksitigarbha, this work of the late Joseon period, which nonetheless retains some stylistic features of the early Joseon period, provides valuable material for the study of the history of Buddhist sculpture.
