It is Daejeon's first cathedral, built in 1921 after the Catholic Daejeon parish was established in 1919. Its overall exterior follows a simplified medieval Gothic style, and features such as the bell tower at the centre of the façade and a three-aisled rectangular plan show the typical form of cathedral architecture. Inside, the vertical division created by the columns harmonises with the horizontal continuity of the timber ribs, clearly expressing the character of a Catholic cathedral, while three arches placed at the sanctuary set it apart from the rest of the space, lending it a sense of hierarchy and sanctity. The stained glass of the entrance window was imported from France, and the relief of the "Stations of the Cross" on the interior walls and the cross atop the spire were imported from Germany; all remain well preserved in their original form. As the first cathedral in the Daejeon region, and as a building that holds the painful memory of the massacre of missionaries and several hundred civilians during the Korean War, it carries great historical significance.
