Records in the Goryeosa (History of Goryeo) indicate that Heungbeopsa Temple was founded in the Silla period, and it is thought to have been destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98. The site once held the Stupa of Master Yeomgeo, a national treasure, and the stupa and stone coffin of the monk Jin-gong, a treasure; these were forcibly taken away by the Japanese in 1931 and are now kept at the National Museum of Korea. Today only the three-storey stone pagoda of Heungbeopsa Temple Site and the stele for the stupa of the monk Jin-gong, both treasures, remain.
