Seonwonsa Temple stands on Manhaengsan Mountain and is said to have been founded in 875, the first year of King Heongang of Silla, by State Preceptor Doseon. It burned down during the Japanese invasion of 1597 (the Jeongyu War), in the thirtieth year of King Seonjo, leaving only an iron Buddha image, and the Yaksajeon Hall and Myeongwoldang Hall were rebuilt in 1754, the thirtieth year of King Yeongjo. The seated iron Buddha image (Treasure No. 422), which survived the fire unburned, is now enshrined in the Yaksajeon Hall. The buildings standing today were enlarged around the 1960s by the then abbot Ilhak with the help of a society of lay believers: he pulled down the Daeungjeon Hall and Myeongwoldang Hall and built the Myeongbujeon Hall (the Hall of the Ten Kings of the Underworld) on the site, besides adding a stone pagoda and a memorial stele. The main Buddha image enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall was brought here from the Bogwangmyeongjeon Hall of Wibongsa Temple.
