Ssanggyesa Temple stands on the southern slopes of Jirisan Mountain. It was founded in 723, the twenty-third year of Unified Silla's King Seongdeok, by Sambeop, a disciple of the great monk Uisang. It was first called Okcheonsa Temple, and was renamed Ssanggyesa during the reign of King Jeonggang of Unified Silla. Jeongmukdang Hall was where novice monks, newly beginning their training in Buddhist practice, carried out their devotions. It was built in 840, the second year of King Munseong of Unified Silla, by Seon Master Jingam. In 1641, the nineteenth year of King Injo of Joseon, Seon Master Byeogam enlarged and rebuilt it, and in 1978 the monk Gosan renovated it again.
