This site was once occupied by Daejeon Prison. In the late 1960s, as the city centre expanded, the prison was relocated and its perimeter wall and main building were demolished. Daejeon Prison began as a small facility that the Japanese colonial authorities set up to imprison independence fighters, after the "manse" independence demonstrations continued in the wake of the March First Movement; it was expanded into a large-scale facility completed in 1939. Many independence fighters, including Dosan An Chang-ho, were imprisoned here and suffered great hardship. During the Korean War, North Korean forces retreating before the advancing Allied forces brutally massacred some 6,000 people here, including around 1,300 civilians. In more recent times, the painter Yi Eung-no was also imprisoned here. Preserved as a means of reflecting on this national tragedy, the watchtower carries meaning as a trace of this history.
