Oksanseowon Confucian Academy, Hadong
하동 옥산서원 · 河東 玉山書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Confucian academy (seowon) built to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Jeong Mong-ju, also known by his pen name Poeun. Jeong Mong-ju (1337–1392) was a scholar-official of the Goryeo dynasty who studied Neo-Confucianism deeply and left behind a literary collection, the Poeunjip. Oksanseowon was built in 1830, the 30th year of King Sunjo, by his descendants at Bibongnu Pavilion on Bibongsan Mountain in Jinju. It was closed during the reign of Emperor Gojong (r. 1863–1907) under the order to abolish Confucian academies issued by Heungseon Daewongun, and in 1965 it was relocated and rebuilt on its present site. The buildings within the academy include a shrine where ancestral rites are performed, a portrait hall, a lecture hall for study, the Dongjae and Seojae dormitories for the Confucian students, the woodblock hall (jangpangak), the inner and outer three-bay gates, and a kitchen building. The spirit tablet of Jeong Mong-ju is enshrined in the shrine, and his portrait is kept in the portrait hall. Rites are held every year in the third and ninth months of the lunar calendar. The woodblock hall houses more than 500 woodblocks of Jeong Mong-ju's literary collection.
