Gangneung Royal Tomb Stele Group
강릉비석군 · 江陵碑石群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are steles standing in the front yard of the Gangneung Ojukheon House municipal museum, numbering 19 in all. They commemorate the achievements of successive magistrates and provincial governors of Gangneung. Among them, one stele draws particular attention: the memorial stele for the loyal servant Mun Ri-dong, which honours a bonded servant who saved his magistrate's life despite starvation during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 (the Imjin War). The steles rest on base stones that project only slightly above the ground; some are topped with capstones carved with decoration, while others are not. They originally stood at the Myeongju county office, were moved in 1954 to the bank of the Namdaecheon Stream in Nammun-dong, and were relocated again to their present site in 1992.
