Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine was built to honour Yi Sun-sin, who rendered great service during the Japanese invasions of Korea of 1592–1598, together with Jeong Un and Song Hui-rip. Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598) passed the military examination in 1579, the 12th year of King Seonjo of Joseon. When the Japanese invasion broke out, he won victories at Okpo, Gangpo, Hansando Island and elsewhere. During the second Japanese invasion he won a great victory at Myeongnyang and died a martyr's death at Noryangjin. Jeong Un (1543–1592), posthumously titled Chungjang, was a military official of the mid-Joseon period who passed the state examination in 1570, the third year of King Seonjo. When the Japanese invasion broke out, he served under General Yi Sun-sin and achieved great merit in the naval battles of Okpo, Dangpo, Hansando Island and elsewhere. In the ninth month, fighting at the vanguard as commander of the right flank in the naval battle of Busanpo, he was killed in action. General Song Hui-rip was a military official of the mid-Joseon period. When the Japanese invasion broke out, he served as an aide to General Jeong Un, argued for the dispatch of reinforcements to the Yeongnam region, and served actively under Yi Sun-sin. After the war ended, in 1690, the 16th year of King Sukjong, local residents built a shrine and enshrined the spirit tablet of Yi Sun-sin, but it was burned down by the Japanese in 1944; the shrine was later rebuilt with funds raised by the Confucian scholars of Suncheon Hyanggyo. Memorial rites are held on the birth and death anniversaries of Yi Sun-sin. The complex consists of four buildings in all; the main shrine hall measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a gabled roof shaped like the character 人 when viewed from the side.
