To the east of Daeungjeon Hall at Ssanggyesa Temple in Hwagae-myeon, Hadong County, South Gyeongsang Province, one face of a large rock has been hollowed out and the Buddha figure carved in high relief within the recess. On the head, a topknot-shaped hair bun is rendered tall and large, and the robe is thick, so that its folds are distinct only around the knees. The left hand rests on top of the right, as though holding something aloft. This Buddha, so plain and unadorned in appearance that it looks almost like a monk, shows unusual features in the treatment of the robe and the hand gesture, and is presumed to date from the Goryeo period.
