During the Korean War, this building served as the temporary residence of President Rhee Syng-man. It was here that the official request for UN forces to join the war was made, and here that the 'Unequal Treaty on the Status of United States Forces in Korea' (the Daejeon Agreement) was signed. The official residence stands in what was then considered the finest residential area in Daejeon, and together with several other official residence buildings it forms a single cluster — the only example of its kind in the country. In plan, the principal rooms face south, so that the building forms a rectangle on an east–west axis, while each room is freely arranged according to its function, giving the elevation an irregular, jagged profile. Although designed with Japanese-style features, its layout follows Western conventions that prioritise circulation, and the building's overall style follows Art Deco.
