Seogyeseowon was built to commemorate Deokgye Oh Geon. Oh Geon (1521–1574) was so devoted a son that he received a commendation from the Ministry of Rites in 1549, the 4th year of King Myeongjong. A disciple of Jo Sik, Kim In-hu and Yi Hwang, he passed the triennial civil service examination in 1558, the 13th year of King Myeongjong, and held a succession of official posts. In 1572, the 5th year of King Seonjo, he resigned office and retired to Deokgye-ri, Saeum, in Gyeongsang-do, where he spent the rest of his life. Seogyeseowon was built in 1606, the 39th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, and in 1677, the 3rd year of King Sukjong, it received a royal plaque reading 'Seogye', becoming an academy granted royal charter. It was demolished in 1868, the 5th year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's edict abolishing Confucian academies, and was rebuilt in the 1920s. The academy is entered through the tall gate Ipdeongnu, with the east and west dormitories standing to either side just beyond it. Behind them, at the centre, stands the lecture hall, Seogyeseowon itself, and behind the lecture hall is the shrine, Changdeoksa. Inside Changdeoksa, spirit tablets are enshrined for Deokgye Oh Geon together with Suodang Ogong and Yongho Bakgong, and a memorial rite is held every year on the second day of the fourth lunar month.
