Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSamaksan Mountain Fortress was built along the ridge that follows the valley on the left side of the summit of Samaksan Mountain. Samaksan Mountain lay on the post road between Chuncheon and Seoul, and the fortress runs along the ridgeline of two facing peaks overlooking Seokparyeong Pass, making use of the naturally rugged terrain. According to legend, Gung Ye, founder of the Taebong kingdom, built this fortress as a refuge here after his defeat by Wang Geon at Cheorwon, having passed through Saembat Samhan-gol on his way. There is also a theory that it was built by the people of Maekguk, a tribal state that existed in the Chuncheon area before the Three Kingdoms period. The fortress wall is about 5 km long, stretching from east to southwest, and was built of natural stones to a height of 1 to 3 m, following the natural terrain. Many fragments of old pottery and roof tiles have been found around the fortress, and a number of meaningful old place names survive in the area, including Heungguksa Temple, Mangukdae, Daegwolteo (meaning "palace site"), and Wadaegi (meaning "tile-kiln site").
