운봉향교대성전 · 雲峰鄕校大成殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local Confucian school founded by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local people. Unbonghyanggyo was first built in 1575, the eighth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, at Seongsan in Gasan-ri, and was moved to its present site in 1640, the eighteenth year of King Injo. The buildings that survive today include Daeseongjeon Hall, the Dongmu and Seomu shrines, Myeongnyundang lecture hall, the Dongjae and Seojae dormitories, the caretaker's quarters, Jingangnu Pavilion, the inner gate and the outer gate. Daeseongjeon Hall enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius, the Four Sages, and sages of China, while Dongmu and Seomu enshrine the spirit tablets of Korean sages. In the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state to support the teaching of its students, but today its educational function has lapsed and only its function of holding memorial rites remains.
