Standing Changchon-ri Stone Buddha
창촌리석불입상 · 倉村里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis standing stone Buddha, located in a privately owned field in Changchon-ri, Juam-myeon, Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, stands in the middle of the field. The round face has a relatively mild, full expression, with eyes raised slightly upward and a small mouth. The ears are unusually thin and pressed close to the back of the head, and on the neck, which is thick in proportion to the body, three faint creases, called samdo, are carved. The robe draped over both shoulders spreads out in a U-shape below the chest, and unusually, a sash knot passes beneath the right arm. Both hands hang down with the palms facing outward, but the right hand is carved so exaggeratedly large that it throws the figure's balance off. The neck is thick in relation to the rest of the body, giving the statue a heavy, massive appearance, and overall its proportions are poorly balanced. The lower body is buried in the ground, so its original form cannot be known precisely, but the statue is presumed to date from the early Goryeo period.
