Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis academy was built to separately enshrine Yi Won (pen name Cheonghyangdang) and Yi Gwang-u (pen name Jukgak), who had previously been enshrined together at Docheonseowon. Yi Won (1501–1568) was an early Joseon scholar who had no interest in officialdom or the state examinations and devoted himself to scholarship. He shared scholarly views with Jo Sik and Yi Hwang, and although the court offered him an official post in 1546, the first year of King Myeongjong, he declined it and devoted himself entirely to scholarship. Baesanseowon was founded in 1771, the forty-seventh year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, when only Deokyeonsa Shrine was built to house the spirit tablets, but it was demolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies. It was rebuilt in 1919 and renamed Baesanseodang. The academy complex comprises a Munmyo shrine, Dodongsa Shrine, and a lecture hall. The Munmyo shrine is three kan wide and one-and-a-half kan deep, and houses a portrait of Confucius. Dodongsa Shrine, also three kan wide and one-and-a-half kan deep, holds the spirit tablets of Yi Won (Cheonghyangdang), Yi Hwang (Toegye), Jo Sik (Nammyeong), and Yi Gwang-u (Jukgak). The lecture hall is four kan wide and two kan deep, with a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof that forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side. It preserves a wooden plaque inscribed by the Chinese scholar Kang Youwei, together with a plaque bearing the dedication text for the completion of Baesanseodang, written by Kim Ku (pen name Baekbeom), Yi Si-yeong (pen name Seongjae), Jo Wan-gu (pen name Ucheon), and Bak Eun-sik (pen name Baekam). Baesanseowon is distinguished from other seowon academies by having two shrines, the Munmyo and Dodongsa.
