Wongudan Altar Jeongmun Gate
원구단 정문

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Jeongmun Gate of Wongudan Altar is the main gate of Wongudan Altar (Historic Site No. 157), which Emperor Gojong built in 1897 to perform rites to Heaven and to proclaim at home and abroad the founding of the Korean Empire. Although the gate was moved from its original site for a long period and used for other purposes, so that its original form from the time of construction was partly damaged and altered, it is the building that served as the first gateway to Wongudan Altar, which was built during the Korean Empire to declare externally that Joseon was an independent, sovereign state and to announce the proclamation of the Korean Empire. It therefore carries very great historical and symbolic significance, and when it was relocated and restored, original members were used as far as possible in the reconstruction.
