This is a seowon (Confucian academy) built to honour Yang Neung-yang, a loyal subject of Goryeo. Yongjangseowon is said to have been founded in 1402, the second year of King Taejong of Joseon; it was closed in 1868, the fifth year of King Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon, and was later rebuilt, though the exact date is unknown. Of the academy's buildings, only the shrine survives. The shrine enshrines Yang Neung-yang at the centre, and also holds the spirit tablets of Yang Ju-un, another loyal subject of Goryeo; Kim Gu-yong, a Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Goryeo period; and Yang Dae-bak, a meritorious subject during the Japanese invasions of Korea (the Imjin War).
