Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seowon (Confucian academy) was established to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of the late-Joseon civil official Hanpojae Yi Geon-myeong. Yi Geon-myeong (1663–1722) became Jeongnang of the Ministry of Personnel in 1684, the twenty-second year of King Sukjong, and after holding a succession of offices rose to Right State Councillor in 1718, the forty-fourth year of King Sukjong, and to Left State Councillor two years later. He was deeply accomplished in literature and calligraphy, and was especially skilled in the Songseolche style. His writings are collected in the Hanpojaejip. The academy was first established in the form of a shrine in 1768, the forty-fourth year of King Yeongjo, when a memorial stone was erected on the old site. The stele pavilion was later rebuilt and the academy proper established in 1928, when the spirit tablets of Hwangjae Yi Gi-cheon, Songae Jeong Dong-jun, Donam Yi Rin-gi, Dosa O Gwang-saeng, Yangchon No Ju-gwan, Ipjae Mun Ak-yeon, Jeong So-song, Jeong Nan-pa and Myeong Jung-hwa were additionally enshrined. The academy's buildings today include the shrine, Sungyangdang, Gyeonguimun Gate, the inner gate (naesammun), the stele pavilion, and other caretaker's quarters. The shrine is three bays wide and one bay deep, with a gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). The stele pavilion is likewise three bays wide and one bay deep, with a gable roof.
