Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis hall was built to house the portrait of Heo Jeon (pen name Seongjae). Heo Jeon (1797–1886) was a civil official of the late Joseon period and a successor to the Seongho school of scholarship, who passed the state examination in 1835, the first year of King Heonjong. He took part in the gyeongyeon, the royal lectures at which scholar-officials expounded the Confucian classics to the king. In his thought, expressed mainly through discussions of classical meaning at these lectures, he consistently stressed a sincere mind (silsim) and practical governance (siljeong), and, grounding himself firmly in reality, put forward comprehensive proposals for reform. His writings include the Seongjaejip and the Saui, a compilation of the proper conduct of a scholar's life. Each year on the third day of the third lunar month, a seokchaerye memorial rite is held here.
