Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pedestal jar, decorated with paintings of horses, has a spherical body, a pedestal foot pierced with seven rectangular openings set at even intervals, and a neck divided into three tiers by raised bands. The surface of the earthenware is greyish-blue, and five horse paintings are drawn on the shoulder of the body. The horses on the shoulder are shown facing right, spaced at even intervals: two are rendered with vertical lines across the body, while the remaining three are drawn only in outline. The paintings are simple but convey a sense of movement, and each horse is shown with two legs rather than four. Judging from its overall form and decoration, the piece is presumed to be Silla earthenware of the late fifth century. This pedestal jar, bearing paintings of five horses that offer a glimpse of Silla-period painting, is an extremely rare example of earthenware decorated with such horse designs. Apart from some repair to the rim, it is in excellent overall condition, making it an important resource for the study of Silla earthenware and Silla-period painting.
