Hoamseowon Confucian Academy
호암서원 · 湖岩書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seowon, a Confucian academy, enshrining Yi Seo as its principal figure together with the spirit tablets of six worthies, including Sim Gu-ryeong, An Seong, So Yeon, So San-bok, and Yi Dang. Songgang Yi Seo (1332–1410) was a civil official active from the late Goryeo into the early Joseon period. He passed the civil service examination in 1357, the sixth year of King Gongmin, and held a succession of offices, but on seeing the disorder of politics he gave up his post and returned to his hometown. Afterwards, in 1392, the first year of King Taejo, he took part in the enthronement of Yi Seong-gye and was ranked third among the meritorious subjects who founded Joseon, being granted the title Anpyeong-gun; he rose as far as chief state councillor (yeongeuijeong). The academy was moved to its present site in 1789, the thirteenth year of King Jeongjo, when it was renamed Hoamseowon. It was closed in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under the order of Heungseon Daewongun abolishing seowon nationwide, but was restored in 1961. The buildings within the academy include a shrine, a lecture hall, a hall for preparing ritual offerings, an outer three-bay gate, and a storage hall. Ancestral rites are held here every year in the third month.
