This is a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to honour the scholar Kim Il-son (1464–1498), posthumously titled Munmin-gong, who was active in the reign of King Yeonsangun of Joseon. A disciple of Kim Jong-jik, Kim Il-son was implicated, together with his teacher and other scholars of the Yeongnam School, in the Jouijemun incident, and lost his life in the Muo Literati Purge. He excelled at writing and criticised corruption among officials. In the first year of King Yeonsangun (1495) he built Cheonggyejeongsa and taught Confucian students there, and in 1905 (the tenth year of the Gwangmu era) local Confucian scholars erected a memorial stone (yuheobi) on the site. The building was later restored to its original form in 1915 and renamed Cheonggyeseowon. Surviving structures include Gugyeongjae, the east and west halls (dongjae and seojae), the Hongnammun gate, and a raised three-bay gate (sotsamsammun), and memorial rites are still held there each spring and autumn.
