This is a shrine honouring General Yi Sul-won, posthumously titled Chunggang, who died for his country during the Musin Rebellion of 1728, the fourth year of King Yeongjo; the shrine itself was built in 1737, the thirteenth year of King Yeongjo. General Yi Sul-won was a military official of the late Joseon period and a native of Geochang. In 1728, the fourth year of King Yeongjo, he was serving as jwasu, the head of Geochang's local gentry council, when Jeong Hui-ryang of Anui raised a rebellion. Yi went out to confront the rebels but, overwhelmed by superior numbers, was captured; he refused to yield even under brutal torture and was put to death. He was given the posthumous title Chunggang, meaning 'Loyal and Resolute'.
