Simsojeong Pavilion, Geochang
거창 심소정 · 居昌 心穌亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSimsojeong Pavilion is the place where Yun Ja-seon, who served as magistrate of Danseong-hyeon during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon, built a pavilion in 1450 after retiring to the countryside, and where he enjoyed the mountains and waters of the area while teaching students. The building has four bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a narrow wooden veranda floor (toenmaru) along the front; the two bays on the left form an open wooden-floored hall (daecheong) and the two on the right form a room, the whole built in the raised-floor pavilion style with gyeja balustrades. Overall, the scale of the pavilion and the arrangement of its interior and exterior spaces harmonise well with the surrounding natural scenery, making it a notable wooden, tile-roofed building. This is also the place where, in 1919, local Confucian scholars gathered to discuss the Pari Jangseo affair (a petition for Korean independence sent to the Paris Peace Conference), and where Changnam Uisuk, the forerunner of today's Geochang Elementary School, was founded and students were taught. Beside the building stands a memorial stele to Yun Ja-seon, and the site is maintained through a collective arrangement among the descendants and maternal-line descendants of the Papyeong Yun clan, together with the Jeonju Yi clan and the Miryang Park clan.
