Historic House in Chodang-dong, Gangneung
강릉 초당동 고택 · 江陵 草堂洞 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was the residence of Heo Yeop (1517–1580), a civil official during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon; the exact date of its construction is not known. It is said to be the birthplace of Heo Yeop's daughter, Heo Nanseolheon (1563–1589), a representative poet of the Joseon period. Passing through the raised gate (soseuldaemun, a gate built higher than the surrounding wall) of the servants' quarters and across the sarang courtyard, one reaches the main house, built in a square, ㅁ-shaped plan. The main house is divided into the sarangchae (men's quarters) and the anchae (women's quarters), with a storeroom placed between them. The anchae is a building of five bays across the front and two bays deep, containing a kitchen, rooms and a wooden-floored hall; it takes the form of a "double house" (gyeopjip), with bays divided at both front and back. Between the sarangchae and the anchae, a raised gate and a side gate divide the space, giving each section its own independence. The rear garden and the sarang courtyard, laid out with a variety of flowering plants and trees, offer a glimpse of the traditional Korean style of garden.
