Mo Hak-dang Historic House, Gangneung
강릉 모학당 고택 · 江陵 茅鶴堂 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house stands about 2km southwest of Gangneung. It is also known as 'Chalbang House': it is said that after generations of the Gangneung Kim clan had lived there, Nam Seok, who held the government post of chalbang (a local post-station official), moved in, and his descendants lived there afterwards; ownership passed to the present owner in 1992. Climbing the steps and passing through the sotteuldaemun (a raised central gate) at the centre of the haengnangchae (the servants' quarters wing), one finds the main house across a wide inner courtyard. The main house consists of an anchae (women's quarters) and a sarangchae (men's quarters), with a gate on the right of the sarangchae leading through to the anchae. The anchae is a building of three bays across the front and two bays in depth, with the anbang (main room) at its centre flanked by a wooden-floored room, a storeroom and a kitchen. In the sarangchae, two rooms and a wooden-floored hall are arranged to the left of the gate leading to the anchae, with a storeroom, a room and a kitchen behind the hall. To the right of the gate, storerooms with wooden walls connect through to the kitchen of the anchae.
