Old House in Baegun-ri, Okcheon
옥천 백운리 고가 · 沃川 白雲里 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBased on an inscribed roof tile, Baegun-ri Old House is presumed to have been built in 1842, the 22nd year of the Daoguang era. It was known as 'Chamban House' because Chamban (Vice Minister) Jeong is said to have lived there. After Korea's liberation it was purchased by the Hwiseokja branch of the Tongdeokrang line of the Milseong Bak clan, who use the anchae (main house) as an ancestral shrine and the sarangchae (men's quarters) as a jaesil (a house for ancestral rites). The roof tiles show excellent craftsmanship and technique, and the floorboards of the toenmaru (narrow veranda) display an old-style construction method, clearly showing Joseon-period woodworking techniques, all in good condition. The timber-framing method also allows the construction techniques of the time to be traced, and apart from some alteration to the stone platform and the replacement of a few structural members, the house retains its original form, making it valuable as material for architectural research.
